How Many Miles Is A Star

How many miles is a star

The distance between us and a star is enormous. Stars are very far objects that we can see in the night sky, but we have one that we see during the day. It is our sun. The sun is the nearest star to Earth. Measuring the distance between us and stars outside the solar system, we use another unit. This because if we did not, then we would have a rough time calculating because of the large numbers. The SI unti for calculating distances of objects like stars is called a light-year. A light-year is the distance that the light can travel in one year. One light year is equivalent to 9.46 x 10x^{12} km or 5.88 x 10x^{12} mi. Imagine using that on your calculators or even computers. That is why scientists made a unit for it.

The nearest star next to our sun is Proxima centauri with a distance of 4.22 light-years. Its name is even a proof that it is the next nearest since proxima means near. It belongs to a three-star system called Alpha centauri.
